It’s been two weeks since our August Journey,
aptly themed “The Holiday”. We had 13 women join us for three days of
sun, fun, rest, laughter and sharing. All but one of the women were
"first-timers" so we were thrilled to meet so many new friends.
There were many great memories made, but I think everyone would
agree that our outing Wednesday afternoon was by far the best. Amazing,
really. No, maybe it was surreal. Yes, surreal.
Bev Mackenzie, an LHM board member, lives on the water in Porpoise
Bay and has a boat. Bev is a great supporter of the Journey, and
offered to take the women on a boat ride around the bay. Because of our
numbers we had to go in two groups. I was part of the first group, and
as we headed out into the bay enjoying the sun and the amazing views,
Bev mentioned something about dolphins. She was woman on a mission.
Apparently there has been a pod of dolphins in the bay since last
March, and she was determined to find them for us.
We rode around for a little while longer, and then we heard her
yell, “There they are!”. She turned the boat around and before we knew
it, we were right in the middle of a pod of close to 50 dolphins. So
close we could touch them. They jumped, flipped, and swam within a few
feet of our boat. You could almost swear they were playing with us.
It was surreal. Beautiful. Breathtaking. A once in a lifetime
moment. And the only thing that was better than that moment was looking
back at the faces of our friends from the downtown eastside -
awestruck, laughing like little girls, lost in play with some of God’s
most playful creatures.
There are no words to describe that afternoon. But I’ve already
heard that the story of the dolphins is making its way around the
downtown eastside, and I think that says it all. What a privilege to be
on The Journey.
